Graphics Slowdown with RemoteBuddy
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello! First off, I love Remote Buddy. However, an issue I'm experiencing with this app is really deterring me from using the program right now.

Basically, I'm getting stuttering when viewing animations or movies fullscreen. For example, the animation when Front Row opens or closes normally would be smooth when RemoteBuddy is closed. But if I run Remote Buddy, the framerate slows down and no longer shows a smooth animation. This slowdown also affects movie viewing, where the video begins to fall behind audio (this does not happen when Remote Buddy is closed).

On a side note, this graphics issue does not occur when I use rival apps.

Here are my specs:
Mac mini
1.66GHz Intel Core Duo
1GB DDR2 RAM
Mac OSX 10.4.7 (build 8J2135a)

Hello Jason,

thanks for sharing (and sorry I didn't get around to answer your
email regarding this yet).

There should only be a short slowdown when you switch applications
since this will make Remote Buddy internally update its display to
represent the current state, so it'll appear instantly when you next
call up the menu. Since none of the other apps for the remote do have
a real, fully integrated menu system like Remote Buddy - with online
help, sliders, ratings and everything, they of course can't even be
tempted to redraw anything of that for later viewing ;-)

Rest assured, though, I'm aware of the problem and am working on a fix.

Best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix,
I have the same problem, too. Especially when using Frontrow RemoteBuddy seems tu slow down the framerate. I am using a MacBook Core2Duo with 1,5GB RAM.

Hi Daniel,

thanks for posting. Are you using the latest release?

Previous releases did do some drawing in the background (and IIRC I
also fixed some remains of this in the upcoming RC2) to present a
refreshed menu when it is being invoked. Since Apple seems to rely on
Front Row having exclusive access to the graphics system at the time
it's invoked and no major drawing being done in the background, a
minimal slow down - or interruption - in the intro animation can occur.

Also, the phenoma is more likely to occur on mobile Macs as well when
they are running on battery power, since their GPUs are then
throttled by OS X (I noticed when testing some new stuff in RC2).

Best regards,
Felix
