wont work with G4 and Tiger 10.4.8

I've installed the Remote Buddy first on my G4 titanium powerbook and then on my G4 dual 1GHZ tower. Using the Keyspan Express remote and its USB IR receiver. When I run it Remote Buddy, it recognizes the keyspan and asks to uninstall the drivers, which I do.

After that, nothing happens with either Keyspan Remote or my Apple remote. They both work with their respective software/drivers so it's not the remotes. the Keyspan works fine on both G4 systems with the keyspan 2.4 beta 4 drivers.

But when Remote Buddy takes over, no go. An interesting side note, if I unplug the keyspan receiver from the USB port and replug, then Remote Buddy won't recognize it's installed until I re-install the Keyspan Drivers, and then Remote Buddy will see it, and again ask to uninstall the drivers. seems weird to me.

anyway, i'd love to see how this software functions. Is it a problem with 10.4.8 perhaps?

thanks

Hello Gary,

thanks for your email.

From what you have observed, it sounds much like the uninstall of
the drivers has not been complete or the DMRantiClassic.kext is still
loaded into the kernel in the system. You can check this with the
System Profiler (choose its category Software / Extensions). There is
no problem with any 10.4 version that I'd know of.

Remote Buddy will continue to be able to see that the Keyspan Express
is connected to the system if the kernel module is loaded. Yet, since
the kernel module already has exclusive access to this hardware and
can only be unloaded with root priviledges, it has no chance to talk
to the Keyspan Express IR receiver itself.

So, if the uninstall provided by Keyspan does not work as expected on
your system, perform these steps to manually uninstall the software:

1) move KeyspanDMR.app to the trash and empty it
2) remove DMRantiClassic.kext from /System/Library/Extensions
3) reboot (to make sure DMRantiClassic.kext is no longer loaded in
the kernel)

Please let me know, if this helps (it should) or does not help. If it
does not, please check System Profiler for the DMRantiClassic.kext
module.

Best regards,
Felix

no go unfortunately. I manually deleted the KeyspanDMR.app and the DMRantiClassic.kext file, rebooted and still no go. I checked the System Profile /system/extensions DMRantiClassic.kext isn't there.

Remote Buddy sees the keyspan IR fine, but nothing happens when I press the remote(s). The IR reciever continually blinks though, which its supposed to only do when receiving an IR signal (at least, this is what it does when runnig with the Keyspan drivers.)

any other suggestions?

Hello Gary,

thanks for the feedback.

Could you please send me a System Profiler XML Profile to
info@iospirit.com? (just open System Profiler and select "Save As .."
from the "File" menu)

I currently see two possible (but rather complex) error sources
remaining and that'll give me a full, detailed picture of what your
hardware situation looks like.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Felix
