Does RB Auto switch behaviors...
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I am working on a solution for a problem I am having with Remote Buddy interacting with DVDAssist. What I would like to know is if RB is suppose to auto switch behaviors based on what app is in the foreground?

Thank you,
Larry

Or, if it is not supposed to auto switch behaviors based on which application is in front, is there any way to switch behaviors via AppleScript?

Hello Larry,

thanks for asking. Remote Buddy changes the active behaviour
automatically as soon as the active (which usually also is the
foreground) application changes. The only exception from this right
now is, if you manually activate a behaviour via the menu. Remote
Buddy then assumes you want to stick with this behaviour and disables
the automatic switching until you deactivate the behaviour via the
menu again. I do think about making the "sticky" functionality
optional, though.

If you are creating a behaviour of your own, please make sure the
bundle identifier for the respective application is set correctly.

Best regards,
Felix

Hello,

Remote Buddy will auto switch the behaviours. There is currently no
AppleScript command available to switch to a specific behaviour. I do
think about adding this, though.

I think both options are a good idea so that it gives more advanced users an opportunity for more customization. Sooner the better. You have a great product and I think this would only add to it!

The problem is, Remote Buddy activates the Front Row behavior anytime Front Row is used, which then disables the auto-behavior switching.

I am the author of DVD Assist. It is an Applescript utility that allows Front Row to access VIDEO_TS folders, UDF ISO images and MPEG2 tranport streams. DVD Assist watches Front Row, and when it sees Front Row play a placeholder movie for one of the above movie types, it kills Front Row and then tells DVD Player or VLC to play the appropriate media.

As far as I can tell, the only way to get into Front Row is to activate the Front Row behavior in Remote Buddy, which in turn turns off the auto-switching. When DVD Assist launches DVD Player or VLC, Remote Buddy continues to use the Front Row behavior, even though Front Row is no longer running, and either DVD Player or VLC is in front.

So, in the end, you either have to disable the Front Row behavior after Front Row has launched (In which case, Remote Buddy will switch to the appropriate behavior automatically.) Or, you have to switch the Front Row behavior off after DVD Assist has launched another program.

So, am I correct in assuming that the only way to activate Front Row is to Activate the Front Row behavior?

You're right that with regards to Front Row, Remote Buddy does employ
some special handling to detect whether it's active - and when it
stops being active. Just checking for the front most application is -
in fact - not enough when supporting Front Row directly.

The situation where Front Row is being killed is not currently
handled, though. The next release, however, will be able to handle
this and react accordingly. I just added the respective code.

Felix

Sounds great! When are you expecting to release the next version? Is there anyway I could get it and test it?

Thanks for the help!

The current, internal beta contains a couple of - for now - still
strictly confidential features, so I can't give out betas for now.
Sorry.

So was B10 suppose to have added this? It is still not working correctly...

Hell Larry,

yes, Preview 10 contains the additional code. If I now enter Front
Row and then force quit it with Apple + Alt + Shift + Esc, Remote
Buddy does act accordingly. This was not the case in previous versions.

In which way does it behave different than expected for you in
Preview 10?

Felix

I just recently started using DVD Assist, too. With 10b, it still does not switch to the DVD Player behavior automatically when DVD Assist kills Front Row and starts DVD Player. Any ideas?

As an aside, will it ever be possible to modify the built-in behaviors? Or delete them? Since I cannot modify the events of built-in behaviors, I find myself creating my own most of the time, which just clutters up the list.

Hello Jonathan,

thanks for the feedback.

After spending some time finding an unencrypted DVD in my collection,
I did now test it myself directly with DVD Assist and found a bug in
Remote Buddy that does prevent the switch from happening. I just
fixed the bug and ran the test with DVD Assist and the next release
of Remote Buddy should now finally fix this issue.

Best regards,
Felix
