Candelair/Remote Buddy troubles with OS X Yosemite Public Beta
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello everyone,

I just upgraded to the OS X Yosemite Public Beta and now the Remote Buddy assistant pops up after every reboot and wants to install the Candelair driver. I let it install twice but it still wants to reinstall it again, so there seems to be a problem here. Remote Buddy also stopped working with my PS3 remote – it connects fine to the Mac (Bluetooth Icon indicates so) but I can't use it with Remote Buddy (to control, say, XBMC).

I realise, of course, that this is the curse of the early adopter that wants to use beta software, but nevertheless I wanted to ask you guys if you have, by any chance, found a workaround for this :)

Thanks for the feedback!

The current version of Candelair is signed with a Developer ID that lacks a special flag that Yosemite now requires for kernel extensions to load. I've already applied for and recently received a new Developer ID from Apple with this flag set, so this issue will be addressed shortly.

Please see "OS X Yosemite" in this blog post for a workaround:
http://www.iospirit.com/blog/article/185/Remote-Buddy-1-25-adds-support-for-Harmony-Smart-Control-providing-control-over-100-Mac-apps-and-what-else-is-new/

Your second problem - that the PS3 remote won't work - is linked to the first: Bluetooth support in Remote Buddy is currently only available when the Candelair kernel extension is installed and loaded. Using the workaround from the blog post above should bring back Candelair - and thus Bluetooth support.

I'm already testing a new version of Candelair that's signed with the new Developer ID and so far it works great. Since I have to maintain backwards compatibility, it'll take some more tests before I can release that version, though.

If you are adventurous, here's the current beta build of Candelair version 1.24 for Yosemite:

https://secure.iospirit.com/_dropbox/Candelair-1.24-beta.zip

The archive contains a version of the Candelair System Preferences pane that allows you to install a version signed with the new Developer ID. You may need to remove the "old" version of the driver (which also has the 1.24 version number and will be reported as the latest release) before installing this build.

###
### WARNING: This is an early BETA build that has not been widely tested. Use it fully at your own risk.
###

If you run

codesign -dvvvv /System/Library/Extensions/RBIOKitHelper.kext

in Terminal.app, the output will contain

1) "Authority=Developer ID Application: IOSPIRIT GmbH (UH96K9N25C)" for the beta build
2) "Authority=Developer ID Application: IOSPIRIT GmbH" for the version bundled with Remote Buddy

Hope that helps.
