Kernel panic in El Capitan safe mode
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Remote Buddy seems to work fine on El Capitan, but when I try to restart my machine (Mac Mini 3,1) in Safe Mode I get a kernel panic.
The backtrace on the screen seems to imply it was caused by an iosprit driver :-(

Hopefully you can reproduce the issue. Happy to provide further info if needed.

Thanks for letting me know.

I have so far not been able to reproduce this on any of my test machines, including a MacMini3,1 (the original Mac mini Server in my case). What I tested:

- installed OS X 10.10, install RB and driver, upgrade to 10.11 -> works
- installed OS X 10.11, install RB and driver, reboot -> works

Can you send me a copy of the crash log (or a screenshot, or a photo), so I can go through the backtrace (felix . schwarz @ iospirit)?

Did you upgrade from a previous OS X release - or was this a fresh install?

How did you install Remote Buddy's driver? Through the Setup Wizard, through the Candelair preferences pane - or manually?

Does this only occur when booting in Safe Mode - or always?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Felix Schwarz

Not sure, it was a long time ago!

Safe mode only

Let me know if you need anything else.

Quick update:

I uninstalled the Candelair driver using the Setup Wizard: Safe Mode boots OK
I reinstalled the Candelair driver using the Setup Wizard: Kernel panic in Safe Mode

So it looks like the Candelair driver has an issue with the El Capitan kernel on my machine.

Thanks for your feedback and the panic log you sent me, which helped me in finding and fixing the cause of the issue.

It's triggered by a new bug introduced in OS X 10.11 that only occurs when booting in Safe Mode. Regular booting does not seem affected by it.

After a full day of working on this issue and thoroughly testing it on several devices across many OS X releases, I've uploaded a new build of Remote Buddy with a version of the kernel extension that no longer panics when booting in safe mode.

You can now get it under https://www.iospirit.com/products/remotebuddy/download/

Remote Buddy will ask you if you want to update / install version 1.27 of the driver.

If you get a chance to try it on your machine, I'd be very interested in your results.

Thanks!
Felix

Hi Felix,

I have tried the new release and I can confirm that I can boot Safe Mode without problems now.

Thanks again,
Paul.
