This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.

Issue solved.

The OS X Bluetooth stack had saved incorrect data about the remote - and removing and re-adding the remote won't correct this, since OS X caches this data in its preference files even when you have already removed a device from System Preferences > Bluetooth.

Deleting the files

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

(and the incorrect data in the cache along with it) solved the issue permanently.
